Fraud Against the NHS is Fraud Against Us All

A former dentist has been found guilty of defrauding the NHS out of more than £92,500 through over 1,000 fraudulent claims submitted over a five-year period. The case involved claims for treatment that was never provided, NHS claims for privately funded treatment, manipulation of treatment records, and improper claiming of work undertaken by trainee dentists.

The investigation by the NHS Counter Fraud Authority highlighted the value of robust data analytics and specialist fraud investigation capabilities in detecting complex and long-running fraud schemes.

This case is a reminder that occupational fraud can occur wherever individuals have trusted access to systems, financial incentives, and the ability to override controls. The impact extends far beyond financial loss—every pound lost to fraud is funding that cannot be used for patient care and public services.

The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed confiscation proceedings are underway to recover the proceeds of the offending.

For fraud professionals, the case reinforces the importance of:

✅ Strong fraud risk assessments

✅ Effective audit trails and record management

✅ Data-led monitoring and anomaly detection

✅ A culture where concerns can be raised and investigated

✅ Close collaboration between investigators, prosecutors and sector specialists

An excellent example of how persistence, evidence-led investigation and multi-agency cooperation can bring complex fraud to justice.
