Ofcom puts Big Tech on notice over scam adverts
Ofcom has proposed a major crackdown on online scam advertising, setting out almost 40 new measures that would require the largest social media and search platforms to take stronger action against fraudsters using their services. [wired-gov.net]
The proposals include:
✅ Banning accounts that post scam adverts and preventing repeat offenders from returning.
✅ Verifying advertisers claiming to represent legitimate businesses.
✅ Checking that firms advertising financial products are properly authorised.
✅ Improving protection against account hijacking.
✅ Testing AI-generated advertising tools to prevent abuse by criminals.
✅ Creating dedicated reporting channels for law enforcement and trusted organisations. [wired-gov.net]
For fraud professionals, this is another important step towards shifting responsibility onto platforms that profit from digital advertising. While regulation can help, prevention remains a shared responsibility between tech firms, regulators, law enforcement, businesses and consumers.
